Event Highlights:
A lineup of 120 sake breweries has been selected to participate in this year’s event. These breweries were carefully selected from over 400 candidates following rigorous tastings conducted by more than 100 experts, including Hidetoshi Nakata, sake professionals, top chefs, and sommeliers. Each day of the event will feature a unique theme, with 10 breweries tailored to that theme, ensuring that visitors can discover new favourites every day.

At the venue, the breweries will personally serve their sake, providing an opportunity not only to enjoy delicious sake but also to learn about pairing it with food and exploring its nuances. On the final day, a “dream team” of sake legends, including “Juyondai” (Takagi Shuzo), will gather. This extraordinary opportunity brings together both young leaders and legends of the sake industry, offering a comprehensive view of the current sake landscape.

What is CRAFT SAKE WEEK?

CRAFT SAKE WEEK was launched in 2016 by organiser Hidetoshi Nakata, inspired by his travels across Japan, where he encountered countless producers involved in sake brewing, agriculture, and craftsmanship. Deeply moved by the profound possibilities of sake and its cultural significance, he created this event to showcase the richness of Japanese culture to a global audience.

Since its inception at Tokyo’s Roppongi Hills, the event has expanded to other regions, such as Hakata in Kyushu and Sendai in Tohoku, drawing over one million visitors to date.

The event features a rotating lineup of top sake breweries, carefully selected by a professional team, including Nakata, offering visitors the opportunity to discover new favourites every day. The sake brewers themselves serve their sake, sharing insights into its enjoyment, food pairings, and the unique characteristics of their craft.

The venue design incorporates elements of Japanese culture and the four seasons, featuring themes such as yagura (scaffoldings), cherry blossoms, bamboo, hemp rope, and masu (wooden sake cups). Each year, renowned architects create stunning installations, transforming the space into an enchanting showcase of Japanese culture.

In addition, the event hosts world-class restaurants, including those with Michelin stars, offering special menus designed to pair perfectly with sake. These dishes cater to both sake enthusiasts and non-drinkers, highlighting the versatility of Japanese cuisine. The event also focuses on the artistry of the tableware, emphasising the beauty and craftsmanship unique to Japan.

Evolving Beyond Sake:
In recent years, CRAFT SAKE WEEK has expanded its scope to include Japanese tea, reflecting its growing global recognition alongside sake. In 2023, the event introduced a curated lineup of 10 categories of Japanese tea, sourced from tea farmers across the country. Visitors could enjoy tea pairings with meals and explore the depth of contemporary Japanese tea culture. CRAFT SAKE WEEK continues to evolve as a platform to showcase the value and potential of Japanese food culture to the world through diverse content and experiences.
